As the craft beer industry matures, real knowledge is standardized and valued. The growth of the Cicerone program, Beer Stewards and other “degreed” connoiseurs is surely a sign of things to come, where expertise can be acknowledged…and misinformation exposed.

As a side note, West Michigan is home to the world’s first Master Cicerone, Andrew VanTil, who is a fine gentleman and one of the nicest guys in the industry from my experience. There are now four individuals who have passed the Master certification among the nearly 10,000 persons who have achieved some level of degree.
