Several friends and acquaintences have recently come to ol’ Max with their disappointing diagnosis: Celiac disease (or some sort of gluten intolerance).
It’s basically a digestive disorder or allergy to a protein found in some grains, including barley & wheat, among other grains. Personally, I shudder the thought of having to forego an occasional weiβbier, but I also sympathize with their plight. It also seems to be a “trendy” diagnosis nowadays as it’s one of those things that suddenly seems to be found everywhere lately, despite the fact that I’d never heard of it ten years ago. Of course, I’m not a doctor, nor have I played one on T.V.
For these striken friends, this obviously calls for some dietary changes, which means beer pretty much joins the “I can’t” list. That sucks.
Fortunately, there are an ever-increasing number of options out there for these people who still wish to enjoy a beer, despite their condition. Admittedly, most of them do NOT taste like “beer,” but some aren’t bad and the effort is getting better:
