Whew … I’m finally back in front of the computer again—with a beer!
It’s been a long few months as I’ve worked through a 30,000 mile tune up on that troublesome knee injury from college days and moved residences—no more parents’ basement for me!—not to mention holding down the day job. All of which are excuses for just being too damn lazy to get in front of the computer AND drink a beer at the same time.
Anyway, I’m hoping to correct the error and get back in the Beer Dork saddle again after another visit to the Michigan Brewers Guild Winter Beer Festival a couple weeks ago. While nothing struck me as “spectacular” during this year’s event, there were a plethora of winter warmers on hand, which reminded me to swing by and pick up a sixer of Eddie Fitz on the way home. One of my favorite new Grand Rapids’ watering holes, SpeakEZ Lounge, has been carrying it on tap and it’s kind of reawakened my appreciation for one of the Midwest’s veteran pours.
Fitz is one of Great Lakes’ year-round flagship offerings, and is among their most awarded brews. Originally developed by Dennis Holland in the early ’90s, it’s taken home hardware that would make a Vivid girl blush, all of it well-deserved, including multiple gold medals from the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Championships.
It pours thick, dark and silky, with an off-white creamy head that clings to the glass like a drowning man to a life raft. Opening malty-coffee sweet and full bodied, it’s balanced with a firm hoppy bite that compliments, rather than fights, with the roasted malts. In short, it’s one of the defining American porters and should not be overlooked on any beer list.
